Safety First in Northeast London Gets Residents New Crosswalk!
For several years, residents in northeast London have been concerned about pedestrian safety as both LTC users and residents trying to reach Beacock Library or the strip malls along Huron Street have tried to cross safely. Last summer, a community initiative supported by the volunteer-driven, resident-based North East London Community Engagement Council (NELCE), Beacock Library and Ward 3 Councilor Bernie MacDonald, brought a petition to City Council asking for a pedestrian crosswalk. After several delays, the a new signaled crosswalk was installed at Huron and Vesta, near the Beacock Library, and it became operational on June 10th.
To celebrate this new addition, on Friday, June 25th, the Northeast Community joined Councilor MacDonald, staff of Beacock Public Library, volunteer members of NELCE and other community partners to officially open the crosswalk. A commemorative cake and beverages were enjoyed by all in attendance, which included a group of area school children visiting the Library..
This is another great example of how residents and community groups can work together, using their collective efforts, to improve safety concerns in their community, and NELCE is proud to have helped champion this much needed addition for the benefit of all in the Northeast community.
